Charles Picken
Having spent my entire working life in Cinema Management from 1968 to 2007 when I retired, I have experienced major Key City centre sites with Odeon, the BFI Film Theatre concept at the Tyneside Film Theatre in Newcastle, a short spell with Cannon Classic in the Newcastle conurbation before continuing from 1976 to the Millennium running a successful twin-screen independent cinema at Morpeth. After it closed I was fortunate in being able to return to Odeon at the invite of its long-serving GM Peter Talbot with whom I had often worked in tandem on promotions such as the British Film Year for which our FROG (Film Year regional Organising Group) received Film Industry recognition at its awards ceremony that year. My final period prior to retiring was as effectively Deputy General Manager at Odeon's new build 12-screen plex at The Gate in Newcastle which within a couple of years of opening regularly achieved Top Ten positions in takings.
Over the years since my retirement I decided to work on an account of this long and varied career including some of the people encountered along the way and the promotional activities engaged in. This was something I intended as a family heirloom but may perhaps be of interest to your project which from looking at the many contributors you list seems to have few from those working at the "end of line delivery product" of the Magic of the Movies ,,, the cinemas themselves and the changes these facilities have undergone to survive over the decades. Successful cinemas I feel are the ones driven by the passion of their managers and their interest in what is shown on their screens as well as being able to interact with the audiences who patronise their cinemas.
