Laura has had a long career in and around film. Known principally to many film students as a film theorist and academic, who brought feminist film theory forward to assume a key place in film studies. Her work on “the look” – essentially about the male gaze was central to this. She also made a small but significant body of films, many with her one-time partner Peter Wollen, all of which might be described as semi-experimental, and some of which worked through issues to do with feminism. Laura also works as an independent film curator at the BFI and for other organisations.

She taught on the BFI’s joint MA course and at the time of writing in 2017 is Professor of Film and Media Studies at Birkbeck College.
